Achieve Striking Piecing in Less Time
Make precise, pristine blocks with ease with a fun spin on paper piecing! Join me, expert instructor Jackie Kunkel, in my online Craftsy class Paper Piecing the Quiltworx Dresden Plate, and learn Judy Niemeyer–inspired techniques to sew beautifully pieced blocks in a fraction of the time!
Get ready to see piecing in a whole new light! During this class, you'll learn how to use Quiltworx techniques to paper piece a gorgeous Dresden block quickly, accurately and easily. In our first lesson, I'll introduce you to the Quiltworx template layout sheets included with this class. These timesaving templates take the math out of piecing, and allow you to quickly cut your fabric on–grain. I'll also show you how to properly prep and organize your template layout sheets and paper foundation units, and share my tried–and–true recommendations for thread and other essential supplies.
Fast fabric cutting is a breeze with my must–have methods! I'll guide you through using your template layout sheets to speedily cut stacks of various units, before demonstrating freehand techniques for curved pieces. You'll love using paper ruler included with class for this step — it makes tricky shapes a cinch!
Next, follow along with me to paper piece your first unit, an elegant, fan–shaped design. I'll walk you through each step, from placing and aligning your fabric on your paper foundation units to chain piecing each section. If you make a mistake, no problem — you'll also discover a simple trick for quickly ripping out stitches.
We'll put the finishing touches on your first unit by attaching a curved strip of fabric. I'll demystify this potentially challenging process by showing you how to sew a simple basting line before placing and stitching your fabric onto the unit. Then, simply trim the excess fabric and marvel at your clean, precise results!
After that, we'll apply the paper–piecing techniques you've learned so far to create the striking, colorful blades for our Dresden block. And, you'll learn how to complete the centerpiece of your design: a simple, beautiful block–in–a–block motif.
We're almost there! Once you've finished stitching your units, it's time to piece them together. I'll reveal an easy technique for joining Dresden blades that results in perfect points, before sharing a foolproof method for joining your remaining units. Believe it or not, your Quiltworx Dresden plate is now complete, and ready to be transformed into a gorgeous quilt!
