On Sunday, along with my napping kitties in my last post, I was able to get a little sewing time in for myself. I was happy!
Remember my Saturday sew-a-thon with my friend Karen. You can read this post here. I was part way done with my blue whirlygig block. On Sunday, I was able to complete it, yay!!
I just love it too! The spikes are paper pieced and made from scraps in my scrap bin.
Paper piecing allows you to get these perfect points. That is one of the main reasons that I love this technique. I use Carol Doak's Foundation paper to print the arcs. It is great for paper piecing, it is most like newsprint.
This whole block is machine pieced with the exception of the middle circle. That is machine appliqued. My friend Karen, was doing machine applique on the Saturday that I was there and offered to do the 3 circles that I needed to be attached to the whirlygig.
She used an invisible thread on the top and neutral in the bottom. A stitch similar to a blanket stitch was used, more like a blind hem type stitch. She did a fantastic job! Thanks, Karen!
In this particular photo you can see where each quarter arc meets. Two different fabrics form one spike. I like that sort of a little surprise in each block and it makes it more interesting too. Don't you think?
Here is another triangle surprise.
Ahhh, the complete block. It makes my heart sing. Three down and six more to go... or maybe more.
Next time I would like to share with you my vision for this quilt and where the inspiration is coming from to create this beautiful top.
